Fitting ending for reeling Wildcats: early exit from NCAAs

By Bud L. Ellis

Nobody could have pictured this type of ending for the Villanova Wildcats back in January. But given what’s happened since then, Friday’s heartbreaking loss in the NCAA tournament was fitting.

The Wildcats, once among the top 10 teams in the nation, are out of the NCAAs. A lead held for most of the second half evaporated in the final minutes, and Luke Hancock’s 3-pointer with 20 seconds left lifted George Mason to a 61-57 victory in the second round of the East regional in Cleveland. Sputtering Villanova sees season come apart in final weeks

By Bud L. Ellis

Teams seek to play their best basketball down the stretch. Certainly that is what the Villanova Wildcats would like to be doing right now.

Instead, the Wildcats are reeling like none of the 68 teams who will tip off the NCAA tournament this week. And if the Wildcats don’t figure out something really quick, a season which once held realistic Final Four dreams will end in mid-March. (Read More…)

Wildcats struggles continue with upset loss to South Florida

By Bud L. Ellis

Four losses in a row to end the regular season gave Villanova fans plenty of reasons to worry. And now, the Wildcats’ stay in the Big East tournament is over in quick, heartbreaking fashion.

A 16-point first-half lead evaporated in the second half Tuesday night, and Anthony Crater’s layup with 5.1 seconds left capped a total collapse by the Wildcats as South Florida stunned Villanova on the opening day of the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden, 70-69. (Read More…)

Wildcats trying to right ship as March arrives

By Bud L. Ellis

A good season for the Villanova Wildcats has slipped into a stumble toward the postseason.

The Wildcats are 21-9 on the season and 9-8 in the tough Big East Conference. But Villanova, ranked No. 19 in the nation this week, has dropped three in a row heading into Saturday’s regular-season finale at fifth-ranked Pittsburgh. (Read More…)

Villanova cruises past West Virginia, 66-50

The Villanova Wildcats used stifling defense to gain a 66-50 home win over the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Maalik Wayns lead the Wildcats with 17 points while star Corey Fisher added 16 and five assists.

Head coach Jay Wright said he believes he has the best two guards in the country and wouldn’t trade them for anyone.

Villanova held the Mountaineers to just 19 points in the first half, allowing them to take an 11-point lead into halftime. (Read More…)

Scottie Reynolds hoping to catch on with Suns

Scottie Reynolds joined an elite club on Thursday night. But if it was up to him, he wouldn’t have.

Reynolds became the first player since 1976 to be named to the First-Team AP All-American team and go undrafted into the NBA. Despite all of his accolades, the Villanova star wasn’t expected to be drafted due to his lack of size and point guard skills.

Reynolds proved that he could fill it up, averaging more than 18 points a game, but never proved that he could distribute and make his teammates better. Additionally, he lacks adequate athleticism and length. (Read More…)

West leaves Villanova

Villanova Wildcats basketball assistant coach Doug West has announced that he is leaving the team.

West is turning his back on basketball at the moment to get involved with a business opportunity. He leaves after three seasons as an assistant at Villanova and played for the school in the mid 80’s.

Keith Urgo and Baker Dunleavy have both been added as assistant coaches on Jay Wright’s staff. Urgo has been the manager of basketball operations for two years while Dunleavy played for the school from 2002-2006.
